The phishing email was almost completely convincing.
Correct branding.
Correct colours.
Correct vague administrative anxiety.
At a glance it looked exactly like an Inland Revenue email.
What finally gave it away was the phrase:
“Your prompt attention is required…”
Not the suspicious sender address. Not the fake link.
The tone.
It sounded less like Inland Revenue and more like a man in a red tie pointing at the camera during a late-night infomercial.
Real bureaucracies have an extraordinarily specific dialect.
Passive.
Procedural.
Emotionally neutral.
Slightly exhausted.
Real institutional language tends to sound like:
“Please log in to myIR to review your settings.”
Scam language often fails because it tries to simulate authority rather than administration.
It imagines institutions as stern, but most real institutions sound tired if not exhausted.
And once you notice this, you start hearing it everywhere.
A few months ago I received a feedback email from MSD following an appointment.
Buried inside the message was the sentence:
“It’s up to you whether you answer it.”
Which may be the most unintentionally honest line ever written by a modern bureaucracy.
Not:
“your feedback is valuable to us.”
Not:
“we appreciate your participation.”
Just:
You can if you want. No pressure.
No one is emotionally invested either way.
And weirdly, that made it feel more authentic than most corporate communication ever does.
Because modern institutions increasingly do not speak with confidence, warmth, or authority.
They speak with procedural depletion.
Not commanding. Not caring. Just continuing.
