Who

Fair question.

If you’ve made it to this page, you’ve probably read at least one essay about something that shouldn’t reasonably support 800 words.

And now you’re here, looking for an explanation. Sadly, you’re not likely to find one because the truth remains stubbornly chaotic.

But let’s see what we can uncover.

Brace yourself for the amount of “I statements” that follow. Turns out it is remarkably difficult to write what is, essentially an “about me” page without them.

I was born in Germany to Welsh parents and somehow ended up in Christchurch, New Zealand.

I am a Gen X archetype, proudly so.

I’m a November Scorpio, and if you’d like to find some meaning in that, you’re welcome to.

The fact that I grew up as a child of the military, educated at Public School (that’s private school to you) and attended St Andrew’s University is probably more revealing than I would like.

I spent much of my early life treating my sexuality as classified information, only discarding the secrecy in my early thirties.

I wasn’t born an only child, but the universe conspired to make me one.

I worry about my parents.

Outside of my family, I love six people.

Small things bug me so I write about them and in the process discover that it wasn’t about that after all.

I have largely unnecessary opinions about apostrophes and typography.

I started EA because I enjoy the benefits of structure, and it felt rude not to share them.

I like finding a better way of doing things, but am deeply suspicious of unnecessary complexity.

I am a collection of influences, contradictions, loyalties, accidents, losses, habits, preferences, people and stories.

Just like you.

In my defence, I did try to warn you that you wouldn’t find an answer.
